About the Meditation Lab

As a parent to college, high school- and middle school-aged children, Jennifer Monness was all too familiar with overwhelming pressure students feel to achieve at school.  As a certified yoga/meditation instructor, Monness had first-hand experience on the powerful impact yoga and mindfulness could have on building inner resilience to navigate physical, mental and emotional stress.

So in the spring of 2017, Monness teamed up with the Irvington High School and Middle School administrators to approach the Irvington Education Foundation (IEF) to support a series of workshops to teach students how to use yoga and mindfulness.

“Bringing these practices into the school curriculum is a profound way to support making students’ lives healthier,” said Monness. “Whether it’s increasing their capacity to learn effectively, assisting in their ability to manage challenging emotions, or allowing them to achieve personal as well as academic success.”

During after-school sessions and physical education (PE) classes, Irvington high school and middle school students participate in a unique program combining yoga with mindfulness meditation practices in a straightforward and lighthearted way. Using Monness’ simple and demystifying approach, each session offers students basic techniques that they can use practically in their daily lives.

Given the overwhelmingly positive response to The Meditation Lab, from students, the faculty, and administrators, the IEF partnered with Monness to share the Meditation Lab with the local community as a way of giving thanks for the continued support the IEF receives.
